MODERN FAMILY CLASSICS DEBUT
ON BLU-RAY JUST IN TIME FOR EASTER!
Experience the excitement of these 2 unforgettable family films, AQUAMARINE, and THUMBELINA on Blu-ray for the first time , from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Featuring talented casts and moving stories, these Blu-ray titles make great gifts for the whole family to enjoy.
AQUAMARINE
This released this year just in time for Easter, this fun feature starring Emma Roberts (Scream 4 and Valentine’s Day), Sara Paxton (The Last House on the Left and Malcolm in the Middle), and Joanna “Jojo” Levesque (Hawaii Five-O) is the perfect movie for any family to enjoy. It's the end of summer and Claire (Roberts) and Hailey (JoJo) have a major problem. In just five days, Hailey's family is moving halfway around the world! These girls need a major miracle, and they get one in the form of Aquamarine, a beautiful mermaid who washes ashore in a late summer storm.
Sweet but clueless to the ways of romance, she offers to grant the girls one wish if they help her find the boy of her dreams. But when they attempt to reel in the cute local lifeguard, the result is something none of them expect and they discover that sometimes what you wish for isn't what you really want after all!
I am glad to be able to pass this movie on to my growing (and getting SO big) Daughter, Gigi. Even though she is only 7, she get's into "big girl" movies now, and not just cartoons. Even though she doesn't know that this was one of the most popular films that JoJo, whose real name is Joanna Levesque (a pop singer from a decade ago, whose chart topping hits include Leave/Get Out and Too Little Too Late ) appeared in, although it should be noted she also was adorable in the film RV, another must-see!
The film Aquamarine was a start for 3 well-known stars! Yet even though this was in 2004, it seems like yesterday. She came out first on the music scene, then appeared in Aquamarine in 2006. The first time I saw Aquamarine I was like, "I know her.." it wasn't until the end of the movie, that I realized it was her.
The other girl, her best friend in the movie, played by Emma Roberts wasn't well known then either, but she got her acting start at a very young age. Since then she has starred in films you probably (or should watch) have seen such as: Valentines Day, It's Kind of a Funny Story, Nancy Drew, and Hotel for Dogs.
This film is about two best friends, played by Roberts & Jojo, who discover a mermaid and help her realize her heart! It's a family friendly movie, and it is very entertaining. The mermaid was played by Sara Paxton who you might recognize for her roles in last House on the left and Shark Night. I saw her recently on Lifetime in the shocking role on Blue Eyed Butcher.
If you are looking for an addition to your Blu-Ray collection, you should check on this movie available for purchase on Amazon for $15.99.* This movie is funny, touching and laugh out loud adorable.
THUMBELINA
From world renowned animator Don Bluth (Anastasia, All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Secret of NIMH) and award-winning composer Barry Manilow comes Hans Christian Andersen's Thumbelina - a magical story that reminds us that if we follow our hearts, nothing is impossible. When Thumbelina, a tiny enchanted fairy, meets Prince Cornelius, she is sure she's found her heart's desire. But before their romance can blossom, she is kidnapped by a family of show business toads, detained by a scheming beetle and married to a befuddled mole! As Thumbelina casts its magical spell on your entire family, you will see why Family Life says, "Parents will be cheering, girls will be in heaven and boys will be rewarded with exciting derring-do!"
Thumbelina is an old 1850's tale, first written by Hans christian Anderson, made into movies and cartoons, and retold with the best of them. It a well known story. It is now revived and crisp and fresh, likely to be introduced to your little ones for the first time. Even though it was probably enjoyed by you, a long time ago, you will delight in watching it and falling in love with this story all over again.
20th Century Fox - Rated G - 86 min - Children's Fantasy
"Disney's revitalization of its animation department in the late 1980s -- and their subsequent huge box office returns -- created a boom period for animated features from other sources as well, although few found significant financial success. Thumbelina, produced in the middle of this period, is another frustrating offering from director/animator Don Bluth. Clearly a talented cartoonist, Bluth has produced few films that realize their promise, and Thumbelina is no exception. The film's biggest problem is its screenplay, which is so freely drawn from the Andersen fairy tale as to have almost nothing in common with it beyond the idea of a tiny girl. The movie also discards the fragile delicacy of the fairy tale in favor of broad humor and hackneyed plotting. In addition, the story Bluth and Willard Carroll have devised centers around one of the most passive characters ever created for a film. Aside from her size, there is nothing distinctive about Thumbelina, and the adult viewer eventually grows tired of her, despite a fine effort from Jodi Benson. Matters are not helped by the ho-hum Barry Manilow score, which contains only one decent number ("Let Me Be Your Wings.") As usual with Bluth, the animation is superior to the story, but while it contains a number of interesting sequences, too much of it is merely serviceable...." end quote Craig Butler, Rovi
Of the two movies, I enjoyed watching Aquamarine the most, but also enjoyed this. Giana enjoyed this much more. Of course, Devonny (the 2 year old) also enjoyed this much more.
It is available from Target for 13.99!!
