My initial thought- there is not enough talking in the first part of the movie, so there isn't much of a set-up. You kinda enter into thier lives, like you already know whats going on, and spend the next 30 minutes trying to figure it out. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, but it took me a good minute to realize the blonde girl was his sister. I started to warm up to it, but it was not really my kind of movie. If your into Dramas, with heavy sex scenes, then this is your kind-of movie. There's brief full-frontal nudity (men & women) but don't let the NC-17 rating scare you off.

British director Steve McQueen's sophomore feature, Shame. Brandon (who is played by Michael Fassbender) is a successful, well-off New York professional that guys want to hang with and girls want to be with. The epitome of the contemporary single guy, from his straight-outta-GQ fashion sense to his nondescript white-collar job to his well-appointed bachelor pad located in a nice high-rise in Manhattan's mid-30s.
Brandon is unable to form a connection with anyone, especially women. He much prefers the company of prostitutes, one-night stands and videos. His co-worker Marianne (Nicole Beharie), with whom he previously had a promising first date -- he later meets up with at a downtown hotel. But he can't perform because he likes her. When she leaves and he  calls up a hooker to check that his equipment still works.

Brandon's sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan), who is as outgoing and emotional as Brandon is reclusive and cold. A nomadic singer whose current address is wherever the gigs are, Sissy moves into her brother's apartment on her own invitation after booking a few New York-area performances. Her general presence unnerves him and upsets his monastic routine, particularly when she enjoys a liaison with his boss David (James Badge Dale) in Brandon's bed and accidentally stumbles upon his favorite online sex site.
The sex in shame is so dirty that it's difficult to see how he gets any joy from it.
His sister however, in my humble opinion, sings very well and I was surprised at the first few dirty moments of this movie to catch something so real, such raw emotion, and it almost was like- "Hey! Who changed the channel?"
Michael Fassbender's deliveres this role on a platter impressively, but it didn't save the long stretches of *yawn* (bored) if you ask me. The film never goes any further than that to actually offer any insight into why he has that compulsion.

The one saving grace of the film is it's visual style and the obvious talent of the crew & cast.

I really do think they were having real sex in this movie! Which is weird because it usually look sstaged but I am not so sure about that with this one... The movie is trying to say he has SHAME in his sex addiction. I would be ashamed too if my whole life revolved around sex.
