Martha Marcy May Marlene introduced the world to “the other” Olsen girl – Elizabeth Olsen. Though many may be familiar with her sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley, Elizabeth Olsen has been steadily climbing Hollywood’ radar with her breakthrough performance in the starring role in Martha Marcy May Marlene. In this feature, we will examine her upcoming films that will for sure highlight her extraordinary talent.
LIBERAL ARTS
Elizabeth Olsen returned back to Sundance this year with Liberal Arts after taking Sundance 2011 by storm with her breakthrough role in Martha Marcy May Marlene, one of the first major acquisitions of the festival. Written and directed by leading star Josh Radnor as Jesse, a 35-year old New Yorker who returns back to his Midwestern Liberal Arts college to help honor his favorite professor who’s retiring, meets a 19-year-old sophomore, played by Olsen, and sparks begin to fly between the two. IFC Films acquired the film prior to the festival’s ending.
SILENT HOUSE
Though Martha Marcy May Marlene had elements of fear in the plot, Silent House marks Elizabeth Olsen’s horror debut where she stars as Sarah, a young woman who is terrorized while trapped inside her family’s lakeside home. Olsen has the starring role in this remake of a Uruguayan film of the same name.
RED LIGHTS
When Elizabeth Olsen returned back to Park City at 2012 Sundance International Film Festival, she premiered not one but two films – Liberal Arts and Red Lights. Proving her acting chops in her debut role in Martha Marcy May Marlene, Olsen found herself starring alongside Hollywood veterans Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver. Red Lights tells the story of a psychologist (Weaver) and her assistant (played by Cillian Murphy) who investigate paranormal hoaxes and are faced with their greatest challenge yet when a renowned blind psychic reappears after 30 years. Like Liberal Arts, Red Lights is also quickly snatched up in the festival; Millennium Entertainment acquired the rights domestically for theatrical release.
