What did we think?
First of all, just let say, I love psychological thrillers, some of my favorites include Vanilla Sky and Identity (if you haven't seen those, jump on it!) so I assumed this would be another one of my favorites....
Ehh, not so much! It was kind-of slow starting out, and extremely confusing. I had to ask the hubby the whole movie what the hell was going on!
Elizabeth Olsen is extremely believable and the music is entrancing, capturing the right feeling at the right moment. This independent film stars Elizabeth Olsen –the younger sister of the currently of the famous Olsen twins – as Martha, a girl who lived in a cult for the last two years, subjected to sexual urges and the leaders chilling darkening philosophy. This is a classic US indie style. There's an unsettling darkness in the deep green, sun-dappled shade of its woodland locations. Sarah Paulson plays Lucy, married to a wealthy, priggish Brit called Ted (Hugh Dancy), and currently on vacation in their huge, lakeside home. Out of the blue, she receives a payphone call from her troubled younger sister Martha (Elizabeth Olsen), from whom she hasn't heard in years, demanding to be picked up from somewhere in upstate New York. Martha comes to stay, and it becomes clear she has escaped from a cult run by a guy called Patrick – who renamed all his devotees as a way of establishing psychological ownership: Martha's new name was "Marcy May". Flashbacks show the abuse and havoc wreaked on poor young Martha's mind. She's paranoid about being tracked down.

The film goes back & forth between Martha’s past and present experiences, and poor Martha can no longer separate past from present. Eventually, the nature of what she was fleeing from becomes apparent.
I anticpated the ending though, and called it before it happened. If you like to be confused by a movie, then this is the one for you.
